If you want to make a lifelong friend, become a pretend superhero.

We love Marvel movies for a million reasons, but it's an extra treat when the banter between two characters onscreen translates to friendship off-camera.

Marvel

With so much Marvel content at our fingertips, we've gotten to see some absolutely delightful, adorable, and hilarious friendships over the years.

Marvel

Here are some Marvel stars who are as close in real life as they are in the movies:

1. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson got along so well while filming Thor: Ragnarok that they teamed up again for MIB: International. Thankfully, they both seem open to future collaborations.

"I sort of love that iconic Hollywood thing of pairing two actors over the course of their career, and they get to do all sorts of things together," Tessa told Refinery 29. "I think of it like that with Chris and me. I hope that we get to make many more things together."

They even confessed to trying to sneak kisses into all of their MCU scenes.

Perhaps they'll have better luck in Thor: Love and Thunder.

2. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan met when they played supporting characters in the Captain America movies, and their friendship was so delightful that it basically led to their own show.

Whether they're teasing each other or showing their mutual affection and admiration, these two are absolute proof that opposites attract.

3. Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.'s real-life friendship reflects the relationship between their two characters. RDJ even cast Tom as one of the voices in his movie Dolittle.

Most recently, Tom confessed to "shamelessly stealing" RDJ's style. Can you blame him?

4. Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh met and played sisters on Black Widow, and they spent the entire press tour singing each other's praises.

Florence was even at the premiere of Marriage Story in 2019, and the two of them could not have been cuter on the red carpet at the 2020 Oscars.

5. Richard Madden and Gemma Chan knew each other for 10 years before filming Eternals, which they both say helped them play the relationship between their characters Ikarus and Sersi.

Along with their costar Kit Harington, they talked about the full circle moment of filming scenes outside of a pub in Camden where they'd all hung out years ago.

6. Speaking of Kit Harington, he and Richard have famously been friends for a long time after meeting on a little show called Game of Thrones.

7. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany play the MCU's most romantic couple, and they have the real-life friendship to go along with it.

Elizabeth has heard Paul tell the story of how he thought he was getting fired from the MCU no less than a million times, and if that's not the mark of true friendship, IDK what is.

What is friendship, if not hearing the same story over and over again and still looking interested?

8. Jon Favreau simply could not imagine Iron Man without Robert Downey Jr. and convinced Marvel executives to cast him, and has said that they are "the president of each other's fan club."

"To see somebody that has talent and to see somebody that has potential — and it just takes a moment sometimes to show other people, but it really makes you happy when now the world understands the things that I saw in him and that he saw in me too," Jon said to Forbes. Jon directed the first two Iron-Man movies and has been playing Happy Hogan for more than a decade.

RDJ has supported Jon on a few of his more independent, non-MCU projects, and says they're "close enough to be like brothers."

9. Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans have been friends and colleagues for a very long time — even before their MCU collaboration — so much so that Scarlett herself said she knows Chris "too well."

She said this right before he scared her on The Ellen Show.

Scarlett was so happy to do a Variety "Actors on Actors” interview with Chris that she let out a "shriek of joy" upon seeing him.

10. Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke worked together on Black Panther, but they've been good friends since their Yale School of Drama days.

Lupita gave Winston his campus tour before he even got accepted.

They later reunited to star as a married couple in Jordan Peele's Us, in which their close bond helped their chemistry onscreen.

"We're in each other's lives beyond the screen, so getting to set together was very organic," Lupita said while promoting the movie. "I trust him as a friend and as an artist, so we could be dangerous with each other and messy and experimental."

11. Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp became such good friends while filming X-Men: Apocalypse that they decided to move in together while the film was shooting.

Alexandra was also a bridesmaid in Sophie's wedding to Joe Jonas.

12. Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans became such good friends during their time in the MCU that they had to be separated during press tours because they had too much fun and "weren't getting s— done."

Chris (Evans) said in 2019 that he hoped they'd be able to star in an '80s-style buddy comedy to shed their heroic alter egos.

13. Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart met years before playing lifelong frenemies Magneto and Professor X in the X-Men movies, but they became close friends over the four movies they made together.

Sir Ian even officiated Sir Patrick's wedding to Sunny Ozell in 2013!

And yes, they've both been knighted.

14. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender — who played younger versions of Xavier and Erik — also became good friends on set, and were never shy about showing their affection.

James said he had only one regret of his time in the franchise, and it was that he and Michael didn't have enough scenes together after X-Men: First Class.

15. James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain had already worked together before they reunited for Dark Phoenix, in which Jessica played Vuk.

They played husband and wife in the three-part film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. Jessica praised James for championing gender pay equality before it was "the cool thing to do."

Their fifth movie together was It Chapter 2, and Jessica teased James on Twitter about following her from movie to movie.

James jokingly said, "She's really difficult to work with. I'm probably the only guy in the industry willing to do it."

16. After playing Pepper Potts in seven MCU movies, Gwyneth Paltrow said that she found "an incredible, lifelong, inspirational partner and friend" in Robert Downey, Jr.

RDJ even teased Gwyneth about those very specifically-scented candles she was selling, but she teased him right back.

It happens at the very end of this voting PSA they made together, and I have to say I think Gwyneth won this round.

17. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston played brothers onscreen, but thankfully their real-life friendship doesn't seem as tumultuous as Thor and Loki's relationship.

It seems like Thor and Loki won't be sharing the screen any time soon, but they're both still alive in the MCU! Hope is not yet lost for a "Hiddlesworth" reunion.

We'll next see Chris in Thor: Love and Thunder, and Tom will be back for Season 2 of Loki.

18. Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland had a lot of scenes together in Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home, but their great chemistry was most evident when they were paired together for the Infinity War press tour.

Benedict was put in charge of keeping Tom from spilling any spoilers, a job he took very seriously.

The two of them recently sat down to discuss Benedict's film The Power of the Dog, which Tom said was difficult to watch because Benedict played such an evil character.

"For the first time in knowing you, I really, like, hated you. I thought you were horrible and so, just, grotesque and awful," Tom said. “No one could have done that better.”

19. And finally: Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds costarred in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and their "public feud" has been well-documented.

It has even bled into the Deadpool movies, in which Ryan — in character as Wade — talks about how handsome and Australian Hugh Jackman is.

Real friends keep you humble by trolling you at every opportunity, and these two have been doing just that for over 10 years.
