1. Suspiria (1977)

2. The Crow (1994)
Miramax / ©Miramax/Courtesy Everett Collection
"Dark, atmospheric, just enough flashes of light here and there to really throw you off. *Chef's kiss* That reveal shot of Eric as the Crow, standing menacingly in his broken circular window? By itself, that should earn it a spot on the list."
3. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Walt Disney Studios
"All of the visuals surrounding the cathedral are stunning."
4. A Star Is Born (2018)
Neal Preston / ©Warner Bros / courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection
"It had amazing people doing the camerawork, who had a ton of knowledge about how to make the characters feel real. It’s full of what feels like real human interaction and it’s amazing. It feels like you enter a new world for a couple hours."
5. Inception (2010)
Warner Bros / ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection
"My favorite moment was when Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character was fighting in the rotating room. The cinematography in that particular scene is immaculate."
6. The Age of Innocence (1993)
Columbia Pictures / ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
"It’s Martin Scorsese’s most underrated film. Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer are forbidden lovers. It's set in 1870's New York. It’s such a beautiful, sparkly, mesmerizing movie. I cannot recommend it highly enough."
7. Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990)
Warner Bros / ©Warner Bros / courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection
8. Se7en (1995)
New Line Cinema / ©New Line Cinema/courtesy Everett / Everett Collection
"Seriously, that movie broke new ground, and now so many crime movies are like it that most people don’t realize how stunning it was when it first came out!"
9. Tangled (2010)

14. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

20. Encanto (2021)

21. The Secret Garden (1993)
Warner Bros / ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection
"I've loved and appreciated it since childhood. The juxtaposition of the dark, forbidding manor house with the wild garden bursting with life and color, and character growth from influence of the one towards the influence of the other. I am a 34-year-old man and it still impacts me when I watch it every spring."
22. Melancholia (2011)
Magnolia Pictures / ©Magnolia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
23. Oblivion (2013)
Universal / ©Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection
"The music, the design, the color scheme, the story — everything is so satisfying!"
24. Out of Sight (1998)
Universal / ©Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection
"Most Stephen Soderbergh movies are so incredibly lit. The scene where Clooney and Jennifer Lopez meet for a drink in a hotel, and it's cut with them having sex upstairs, it's just so beautiful to me. The lighting is the perfect color temperature, and the images are softened just a little to make it sexy as hell without really seeing any of the sex."
25. Knives Out (2019)
Claire Folger / © Lionsgate / courtesy Everett Collection
"Every frame is either lush with texture and tone, or stark and bold. This movie is meant to enjoyed over and over again, not only for the story, but also because it’s so visually vibrant."
26. House of Flying Daggers (2004)
Sony Pictures / ©Sony Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
"Everything about it, but especially the last 10 minutes. So incredibly beautiful, yet what was happening within the story was so heartbreaking."
27. John Wick (2014)
David Lee/©Summit Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection
"This is kind of a strange one, but the lighting in those movies is AMAZING and very aesthetically pleasing, as well as the aerial shots of New York."
28. Drive (2011)
Filmdistric / FilmDistric/Courtesy Everett Collection
"Amazing cinematography. Beautiful, neon colors. Just everything."
29. Alexandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain (1973)
ABKCO Films
30. The Duellists (1977)
Paramount Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection
"It's a movie that hardly anybody has heard of (probably because it was released in the '70s). I swear you could freeze-frame any part of the movie and hang it on your wall as art. Gorgeously filmed. It was Ridley Scott's first full-length feature, and presages his mastery of his craft. Check it out."
31. La La Land (2016)
