"The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me."

Halyna Hutchins' husband, Matt Hutchins, has spoken out about his wife's death after the 42-year-old cinematographer was shot and killed by a prop gun on the set of Alec Baldwin's movie Rust last October.

The actor, who was holding the weapon containing live rounds when it discharged, says he didn't pull the trigger. Halyna's family recently filed a wrongful death suit against Alec, production companies, and others involved in Rust for allegedly neglecting proper safety protocols during filming.

A police investigation into the incident, which took place at New Mexico's Bonanza Creek Ranch and wounded Rust's director Joel Souza in addition to killing Halyna, is still ongoing. Criminal charges haven't been issued.

While the family's lawsuit claims recklessness and a broader effort to save money also contributed to the accident, Matt believes that Alec is at least partly to blame for the tragedy. "The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me," he shared during an appearance on the Today show.

"Gun safety was not the only problem on that set. There were a number of industry standards that were not practiced and there's multiple responsible parties," Matt continued, before recalling Alec's December ABC News interview and how it felt watching him.

At the time, Alec acknowledged that "someone is responsible for what happened" on the Rust set. "I can't say who that is, but it's not me," he said.

"Watching him, I just felt so angry," Matt explained. "I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly in such a detailed way and then to not accept any responsibility after having just described killing her."

"Almost sounds like he was the victim," he added. "And hearing him blame Halyna in the interview and shift responsibility to others and seeing him cry about it ... I just feel — are we really supposed to feel bad about you, Mr. Baldwin?"
