Marvel Studios / Via youtube.comIt looks like the legendary thespian will finally return as the mutant telepath, Charles Xavier/Professor X in this inter-dimensional blockbuster. His role in the film could very well herald the X-Men's long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could have a massive impact on the franchise as a whole. Here's why.
In the trailer, Stewart's character was spotted talking to Strange while sitting with a shadowy organization that had taken the sorcerer into custody.

This secret group is most likely the Illuminati, whose members in the comics included Professor X, Iron Man, Black Panther, Mr. Fantasic, and Doctor Strange himself. But instead of just overseeing superhuman behavior in the world, the MCU's version of the group might maintain stability throughout the multiverse. Strange's "desecration of reality" most likely caused Mordo to present the Sorcerer Supreme to them as his prisoner. Said crime could've involved Wanda herself.
In the House of M comic, the Scarlet Witch infamously used her chaos magic to wipe out most of the world's mutants. Though these mutants weren't killed, Wanda had taken away all of their powers by simply uttering the phrase, "No more mutants."

Fans have predicted that the Scarlet Witch will use her powers to warp reality and bring mutants into existence. However, one Reddit user theorized that she had already erased the mutant population from her reality, and if this is true, everyone's memories of the mutants' existence could've been erased by Wanda. In the crazy world of the MCU, this would be a reasonable explanation for why we haven't seen any mutants in it yet, and it would make for a truly shocking twist.
The Professor X we saw in the trailer could've been from the reality that Wanda wiped out, and his knowledge of what she did to his fellow mutants could make her a threat in his eyes.

In fact, Wanda's actions could've driven the Professor to form the Illuminati in the first place, with the "truth" he spoke referring to how Wanda changed reality. Perhaps when Strange asked for Wanda's help in dealing with the multiverse, he used her forbidden magic to do so, which might've only made the problem worse. And with the widespread chaos that was shown in the trailer, it wouldn't be a surprise if this caught the Professor's attention.
The trailer does hint at Wanda turning to the dark side, which could bring her into conflict with Professor X and the other members of the Illuminati.

However, Wanda could still atone for her sins by bringing back the mutants she erased from existence, allowing her to join the Professor and his X-Men and usher in a new era for the MCU.
