Can we talk about Nate's other brother?
Euphoria has been officially greenlit for a third season, and there are a handful of side characters we haven't seen in quite some time who I'm a bit curious about...
HBO / Via giphy.com
Along with the main crew of Rue, Maddy, Jules, Kat, Nate, Cassie, Lexi, and Fez, there are several Euphoria characters who have only had brief appearances on our screens (so far), and I've been wondering what they're up to.
1. Tyler Clarkson
HBO
Appeared in: "Pilot," "Stuntin Like My Daddy," "The Next Episode," and "The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed"
Oh, poor, ill-fated Tyler. The college student did little but "smash" the fiery Maddy Perez in the pool on Episode 1 of Season 1 at McKay's party, and oh did he pay the price for it. Not only did Nate Jacobs use his name to catfish Jules, he stalked him at work and home, then broke into his apartment and beat him to a bloody pulp after becoming convinced that Tyler had sexually assaulted Maddy (he didn't). If that wasn't bad enough, Nate later framed Tyler for the bruises on Maddy's neck (that Nate himself inflicted), using the threat of a statutory rape charge so he'd take the fall. It was a tragic end for a seemingly nice enough character who became collateral for one of the volatile Jacobs men.
Will we see Tyler in Season 3? Doubtful, as he's likely in jail or prison, though it would be interesting to see him come back and take down Nate Jacobs. Someone's got to!
2. Derek
Eddy Chen / HBO
Appeared in: "Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys" and "You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can"
We were introduced to Cal's high school best friend and long-lost love, Derek, in a bittersweet flashback, and it turns out their non-starter of a relationship created the ultimate rupture in the Jacobs family patriarch's psyche. While we only saw him through Cal's (and perhaps a psychic drugged-up Rue's) perspective, Derek seemed like a sweet, sensitive kid well on his way to starting an exciting new chapter of his life post–high school. We know he was planning on going to "a state school out West," but that's about it. If Cal hadn't gotten Marsha pregnant, would he and Cal have gotten together for real? Would they still be together today? More importantly, where is Derek now, and is he even alive? It would appear that he might not be, as when Cal revisits the bar where they once kissed back in the '90s, he has visions of a young Derek as if he's a ghost straight from his past.
Will we see Derek in Season 3? We're not sure yet if and when Cal will return to the show, though I have a feeling we'll be seeing him again in future seasons, as there are many Jacobs family mysteries yet to uncover (including many hints at childhood sexual trauma on Nate's part). It's possible Cal ran off to go find Derek, and just as possible that Derek is now either married with kids to a man or woman...or deceased.
3. Roy and Troy McKay
HBO
Appeared in: "Pilot," "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," "Shook Ones Pt II," and "The Next Episode"
Mischievous younger brothers to football legend Chris McKay, Roy and Troy delighted viewers by playing the rambunctious, foul-mouthed teens who pressured Kat into losing her virginity back in the pilot episode, introduced Gia to the delights of smoking weed, and did pretty much everything together, including taking hits of their vapes at the same time. It was mesmerizing, they were often obnoxious and badly behaved — though also often lovable and funny, a classic teen paradox — and arguably added some childlike playfulness and comic relief to an otherwise extremely tense first season.
Will we see Roy and Troy in Season 3? If Chris McKay makes a return, then hopefully, though since McKay is no longer with Cassie and is now in college, it doesn't seem likely they'll return anytime soon. It would be cool to see a future Gia-centric episode, as these two are definitely running in her friend circle.
4. Christopher "Chris" McKay
Eddy Chen / HBO
Appeared in: "Pilot," "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," "Made You Look," "Shook Ones Pt II," "'03 Bonnie and Clyde," "The Next Episode," "The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed," "Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door," and "Out of Touch"
The determined State University football star was quite literally a major player in Season 1 and even had his own cold open introduction brimming with a fascinating backstory in Episode 6. His relationship with Cassie was as complicated as his issues with toxic masculinity, and while we saw him throughout Season 1 and in the first few episodes of Season 2, he seems to have since been written out of the show. This makes sense, as Cassie quickly moved on to Nate after their breakup, and McKay is in college, unlike the rest of the Euphoria cast. However, he brought a lot of heart and humanity to the show, and it was great to have another well-developed Black character in an already diverse cast.
Will we see McKay in Season 3? It's very possible, if only for an episode or two. On the future of his character, Smith told The Daily Beast: “I’m not even really sure, to be honest with you. I think that’s a question we have to ask our creator [Levinson], where he sees it going. We haven’t even gotten that far in the conversation, him and myself, on this, actually.”
5. Daniel Dimarco
HBO
Appeared in: "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," "Made You Look," "Shook Ones Pt II", "'03 Bonnie and Clyde," "The Next Episode," and "The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed"
We know Daniel best for being Kat's boyfriend back in sixth grade (before she was unceremoniously dumped for gaining weight over the summer, though the jury's out on whether or not that was even his doing) and making out with a drugged-up Cassie Howard on the Ferris wheel in the carnival episode. He tried to pursue her afterward, even though she insisted she had a boyfriend and didn't want to ruin things, and it ended up almost working in his favor because, despite Cassie's insistence on remaining faithful to McKay, the two later almost had sex at his Halloween party after comparing costumes. Cassie, however, stopped the hook-up before it began, angering Daniel and causing him to lash out and slut-shame her. A classic archetypal "Nice Guy" who's really a total jerk and thinks women owe him sex in exchange for his "niceness," Daniel was totally unlikable and smarmy, and he really showed us what the average guy at Eastland High thinks of Cass.
Will we see him in Season 3? It's possible, especially if Cassie is somehow able to exact revenge, or maybe he and Kat will rekindle their former childhood flame. That might make sense, as Kat has since dumped Ethan and seems more interested in pursuing hook-ups with creeps than a long-term relationship.
6. Anna
HBO
Appeared in: "The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed"
Though she was a minor character who only showed up in one episode of Season 1, Anna ended up being quite the catalyst for Jules to run away and leave Rue alone at the train station in the finale. While Jules was off visiting old friends in Los Angeles, she encountered the confident, straightforward woman who seduced her by doing her makeup while sitting on top of her, paying her full attention, and asking her more about her sexual orientation. After feeling uncomfortably responsible for Rue's recovery, flighty Jules quickly became infatuated, and the two ended up having a fling. When questioned about the dalliance after catching Jules texting Anna, Rue got Jules to admit that she was in love with both women, putting their relationship in a sticky spot once again.
Will we see Anna in Season 3? It would be fun to revisit her character and potential relationship with Jules if Jules ever does return to the city. We didn't see a lot of Jules' storyline in Season 2, and since Rue and Jules are definitely done for now (and with Elliot seemingly now out of the picture), it might make sense for Anna to step in as a replacement love interest. After all, Jules loves to be loved.
7. Sonia Perez
HBO
Appeared in: "'03 Bonnie and Clyde," and "And Salt the Earth Behind You"
Maddy's mother may not seem like a very important character, but do remember she was the reason Nate Jacobs was officially accused of assaulting Maddy. After Maddy passed out one day at school, she was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered the bruises Nate left on her throat. Maddy's mom, Sonia, immediately seemed to sense that it had been Nate who did it, and she wanted to press charges even as Maddy protested. It was heartbreaking to watch as a mother struggled to try and save her daughter from the clutches of an abuser, and doubly infuriating to see her ignore Maddy's pleas and cries for help while ignoring her very valid points about the toxic relationship she'd modeled for her with her own deadbeat husband. Maddy seems to be moving on to bigger and better things than East Highland, but Sonia may still return, as she had a massive impact on her entire childhood and adolescence.
Will we see Sonia Perez in Season 3? Possibly, especially if we get to explore more of Maddy's background and future storylines. It would be interesting if the two ever reached a point of understanding, or if Sonia — while no doubt well-meaning — ever apologized for the trauma she put her daughter through, even if she never meant to hurt her.
8. Cal Jacobs
Eddy Chen / HBO
Appeared in: "Pilot," "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," "Shook Ones Pt II," "'03 Bonnie and Clyde," "The Next Episode," "The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed," "And Salt the Earth Behind You," "Out of Touch," "Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys," "You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can," and "The Theater and It's Double"
Love him or loathe him, there's definitely a lot more to the story of family patriarch Cal Jacobs to be told. The last time we saw him, he drunkenly railed on his entire family, whipped out his penis, and peed on the floor without any remorse. He then grabbed the family portrait that the camera has been lingering on since the pilot and left, and to where, we're not sure. Could he have gone to live out his repressed sexual desires? Did he search for his long-lost high school love, Derek? Or is Cal up to something far more sinister? He left a gun for the traumatized Nate in the same drawer in which Nate had discovered his creepy sex tapes as a child, and in Episode 7, we get some strong hints that he might have sexually abused his young son (though in Season 1, a voiceover Rue claims he isn't a pedophile, so it's hard to say how much of that was coming from Nate's twisted imagination).
Will we see Cal Jacobs in Season 3? Thematically, all signs point to yes, as Cal not only got his very own flashback this season, he's critical in understanding Nate's complex character. Plus, we don't know what happened to that mysterious third child of his in the family photo, which brings me to...
9. The third mystery Jacobs son
HBO
Appeared in: (photographs) "Pilot," "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," and "You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can"
Among many Euphoria Reddit and Twitter threads, theories abound about who exactly the mystery third boy in the Jacobs family photo is. Is he a child who tragically died when Nate and his brother Aaron were children? He can't be Ashtray, as some fans have speculated, as the two are too far apart in age for it to make sense. We know based on the photo (that we are shown over and over again, definitely not on accident, and that Cal takes with him when he leaves his family) that he's the youngest child, but that's about it. Not one character has ever mentioned his existence, not even in passing, and during the Season 2 scene between Nate and Marsha, Marsha questions why Nate turned out the way he did and why things seemed to go blurry for him at around 8 or 9, yet doesn't once suggest that maybe he witnessed (or caused) the death of a sibling. Curious, curious...
Will we finally learn who the mystery third Jacobs son is in Season 3? Hopefully. As the show is stacked with subtle clues, visual hints, and Easter eggs (or so claim many of the fans), Sam Levinson is definitely playing something of a clever long game, story-wise, giving us just enough to keep us guessing while holding back and allowing us to patiently wait for things to unfold.
10. Principal Hayes
HBO
Appeared in: "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" and "'03 Bonnie and Clyde"
He's definitely not the first character who crosses our minds when we think of Euphoria, but the bone-weary principal of Eastland High did move the plot forward several times in Season 1. First, he tried to get to the bottom of who was behind Kat's leaked sex tape, interviewing both her and a number of students. Second, he was witness to Nate getting in trouble for choking Maddy and being taken down to the police station. He seems to know a bit more about the student body than he lets on — if only by quiet observation — and could be involved in future school scandals.
Will we see Principal Hayes in Season 3? Assuming that we remain largely in the world of Eastland High in Season 3, we just might see Principal Hayes again, though Sam Levinson has seemed to focus less on the mechanics of the school this season and more on the characters' inner experiences, so it could go either way.
