This movie was a long time coming.

After two years of delays, Jared Leto's superhero film, Morbius, has finally premiered in theaters.

Though it has been met with scathing reviews, this movie still presents many exciting possibilities for Sony's Spider-Man universe that fans will look forward to seeing. So let's review what Morbius sets up for the studio's Spidey-centric universe.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

"I Am...Venom!"

There were reports that a lot of world-building Easter eggs found in the trailers were taken out of the film. However, Morbius still confirmed that the Living Vampire exists in the same world as Tom Hardy's Venom, thanks to a couple of references to the Lethal Protector and his exploits in San Francisco.

The Chameleon

Just as Rhino and Black Cat are still referenced in an issue of the Daily Bugle, the newspaper name-dropped another villain with an issue presenting the headline "Chameleon's Great Escape." One of Spidey's first-ever enemies, this villain is famous for his ability to look and talk like anyone, making him a formidable foe for the webhead. This Easter egg may very well set up the villain's confirmed appearance in Kraven the Hunter next year, and his implied escape from prison might be the reason he confronts his half brother, Kraven.

A Third Vampire

At the end of the film, we see Morbius's love interest, Martine, come back from the dead as a living vampire after they share each other's blood. Her resurrection presents the possibility that she and Morbius will once again team up, but as a super crime-fighting duo in future films. Also, Martine's journey as a superhero could help her character stand out and make her more than just the protagonist's girlfriend.

Who Is Spider-Man?

Unfortunately, after watching Morbius, we still don't know which Spider-Man is operating in Sony's cinematic universe. With the shot of the web slinger graffitied in an alleyway absent from the film, we have even less of an idea which version of him is part of this world. Hopefully, Sony will deliver on their promise by introducing Spider-Man sometime soon because so far, their movies' biggest draw is the characters' connection to Spider-Man and the possibility of a crossover.

More of the Multiverse

In the mid-credits scenes, we see Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes inexplicably transported to Morbius's universe, thanks to the rift in reality seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Though the film doesn't explain why Toomes was taken out of the MCU, perhaps we'll get the answer in later films, possibly in Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney's Madame Web. And maybe we'll see more of Spider-Man's MCU villains (even those who have died) join Vulture in this new world. Mysterio, anyone?

A Not-So-Sinister Six?

Sony / Via YouTube

In the film's second mid-credits scene, Morbius goes out into the desert and meets Toomes (who somehow made a new Vulture suit). For some reason, the latter knows that he is in this new universe because of Spider-Man, and he suggests that he and Morbius team up to "do some good." This is clearly setting up another version of the Sinister Six, but it looks as if this one will be more heroic than villainous. It's not the kind of team-up we were expecting from this legion of villains, but given that No Way Home already did an evil Sinister Six (or Five), at least Sony is now trying something different. But who knows how long this team's good intentions will last, especially when they encounter Spider-Man?
