It's exactly what I imagine being in a Star Wars video game would feel like.
The coronavirus pandemic is still impacting travel, and destinations around the world have different COVID-19 restrictions in place. Always check and adhere to local government policies as you're planning any future trips.
Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida just opened an immersive, overnight, Star Wars–themed experience called the Galactic Starcruiser.
Disney
Anyway, the adventure for the Galactic Starcruiser comes at a hefty price tag*, so I figured I'd outline everything that happens on the excursion to see if it's worth the cost to you!
Disney
Prices are per person and start at $1,209 per person per night. The price per person goes down with more people in the party. The cost includes your cabin on board the ship for two nights, food and beverage on the Starcruiser (and a quick service meal at Disney's Hollywood Studios), a one-day admission to Disney's Hollywood Studios, valet parking, and a Databand for you to keep. *BuzzFeed was provided this trip free of charge; however, we were under no obligation to give a positive review.
You arrive at the Starcruiser on Day 1. It starts off at the terminal where you get a Databand that you can wear for your journey.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
From there, passengers get their luggage taken to their room for them and they get bags checked by a security guard with a very festive flashlight.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
From there, you board a shuttle up to the Halcyon, the ship you're staying on for your excursion. The Halcyon is the "275-year-old" luxury starcruiser from the Star Wars planet of Chandrila.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
If you were to get into a jet pack and look at the ship from space, it would look like this.
The shuttle you board at the terminal has windows that show the intergalactic jump up to the Halcyon.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
When you step off the shuttle, you're transported to the atrium of the spaceship with art deco charm reminiscent of the golden age of travel.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Giant holographic tubes stretch from the floor to the ceiling on either side of the atrium, displaying things like the logo of the ship and the entertainment of the night.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
From the atrium, you can also access the bridge of the ship, the Sublight Lounge, the Chandrila Collection gift shop, passenger services, and elevators and stairs to the rooms.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
The atrium is where most of the hubbub happens on the ship.
David Roark / Disney
And everything that happens on the ship is all accessible on your phone, which, with the Play Disney Parks app, turns into a Datapad. The Datapad is crucial to enjoying the experience without missing anything.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
On the Datapad is an itinerary, showing everything that's happening on the ship, like lightsaber and bridge training, and group activities.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
The first event is a Muster at 4 p.m., a toast to the ship and the journey by the captain where nothing will go wrong at all (wink, wink).
Kent Phillips / Disney
It gives you just enough time beforehand to go to your cabin and get your bearings!
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
There are a few different types of cabins, starting with a standard cabin and getting bigger from there. The standard cabin comfortably sleeps four and comes with a queen bed and a bunk bed.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Other amenities in the room include a waterfall shower, a thermal blower, and a cooling supply unit (aka hairdryer and mini fridge lol).
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
AND a reusable water bottle that you can refill any time you want in the atrium and bring back to your room.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
The rooms also come with a window that overlooks the Outer Rim, the system you orbit. It opens and closes with the touch of a button, so it can be shut when it comes to night-night time.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
The room is also set up with a comm-link to a droid named D3-O9. She's accessible any time you tap your Databand and is there to answer any questions.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
When 4 p.m. on Day 1 rolls around, it's time for the Muster, where Captain Keevan, the alien captain of the ship, goes through some safety rules and starts to make a toast to the voyage.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Captain Keevan also teases that the galactic superstar, Gaya, will be on board, and performing with her backup accompanist, Ouannii, a Rodian alien with an unbelievable talent for beat-making.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
This is where the story gets spoiler-y!!!
Lucasfilm
Unfortunately, the Muster toast will be interrupted by a pair of stormtroopers and a First Order officer named Lieutenant Kroy.
Kent Phillips / Disney
Lieutenant Kroy is mad because he believes there are Resistance sympathizers on board (which there totally are), and he vows to stay on the journey to get to the bottom of it.
Kent Phillips / Disney
With the introduction of Lieutenant Kroy, the Muster is over and the wait for dinner is on. Dinner has two seatings in the Crown of Corellia dining room, at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
This is when the Datapad comes in handy, because you'll start receiving scuttlebutt from the characters on board after Muster.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
Passengers will start to receive transmissions from characters like the captain (who's a Resistance sympathizer) and the lieutenant (of the First Order), who ask them to accomplish covert missions on board with their Datapad and Databand that will aid either faction. Missions range from deleting records from the passenger manifest to sneaking into the engineering room and venting the carbonite chamber.
What makes the experience cool is that maybe one person in your party is a Resistance sympathizer and they're instructed on their Datapad to delete the passenger manifest.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Then, and only then, will they, and only they, have access to the passenger manifest when they tap their Databand.
This could be wildly different from someone else in the party doing another mission where they're granted access to the engineering room or cargo hold, access to which is typically restricted.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
Additionally, after Muster, you can start mingling with some key characters on board, like Sandro, an alien who sold everything for a ticket on the Halcyon to see Gaya perform.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Guests are encouraged to interact with characters, eavesdrop on them, and see what the commotion is, because different story arcs happen simultaneously.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
When dinner comes around, Gaya will perform, and she is far more incredible than I expected her to be.
Kent Phillips / Disney
Dinner is a multi-course meal with flavors like miso shooters, a bento box, and roasted tuber vegetables.
Disney
The dinner is themed heavily in the Star Wars universe, but my favorite item on the menu was the Mark of the Huntress.
David Roark / Disney
It's a drink that apparently used to be ordered by bounty hunters. It signified to other bounty hunters on board to stay back because they were hunting a mark on the ship.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Lore like this is interwoven throughout the menu, and the presentation of the food is unique and futuristic.
Kent Phillips / Disney
Assorted fruit has never looked so otherworldly.
Several characters show up at dinner. Captain Keevan will greet her guests, and Lieutenant Kroy will show up and monitor the show.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Gaya performs several of her hits live and invites Sandro to accompany her.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
That afternoon, you'll also find out that the Resistance is hiding a stowaway on board in the form of a famous wookiee.
Disney
After dinner, the cruiser starts bustling. Passengers can choose to help Chewbacca evade the stormtroopers patrolling the ship, take up bridge training or lightsaber training, or head back to the room for a little break.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
When you check back in with D3-O9 on the ship, she'll also have other requests for you where you can try to barter with aliens who won't let a ship pass or convince a stormtrooper that the ship is friendly, unfriendly, or neutral to the First Order.
Caitlyn Mccabe / Disney
As you help characters, new events will pop up on your Datapad that are exclusive to the things you do and don't do on the ship.
But...when you aren't doing a mission, you can head to the Sublight Lounge and play Sabacc, the same game they play in Solo: A Star Wars Story, or you can grab a drink from the bar there.
Caitlyn Mccabe / Disney
The drinks here are just as impressive. The cup in which the chemist makes the Hoth-inspired drink is flash-frozen before the drink is made, and the Mustafar-inspired drink comes with a vial of "lava" that can be poured on the drink to make it smokier.
Disney
After an eventful first day, Day 2 promises to be just as jam-packed, since there is a planetary excursion planned to Batuu, the Star Wars–themed land at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
When passengers wake up for Day 2, a breakfast buffet awaits in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room.
Kent Phillips / Disney
It's an all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet with little galactic bites you can fill your tray with.
Disney
After they get their food, it's off to the shuttles for Batuu. Passengers receive a pin that says "Halcyon passenger" to wear.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
The shuttle leads to a private entry straight into Galaxy's Edge at the back of Disney's Hollywood Studios park.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Once passengers arrive at Galaxy's Edge, they may have gotten some missions to their Datapad from characters with things to do while at Hollywood Studios to aid their faction on board the ship.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed / Disney
For example, we had a mission to help the Resistance from the cruise director while on Batuu.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
She required contact from a forger at Oga's Cantina on Batuu.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Our waiter on Batuu slipped us a special coaster with a QR code on it that we scanned on our Datapad to set up contact between the forger and our cruise director.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
While passengers don't have much time on Batuu (shuttles between Hollywood Studios and the Halcyon only run for nine hours), priority entrance passes (called Lightning Lane passes) are loaded onto Databands for Starcruiser passengers to enjoy walking straight on the two Star Wars rides in the land — Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Between Batuu and dinner, there is a lot happening on board that only people following along with the story would be aware of.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
For example, Rey boards the ship.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
Gaya hosts an acoustic music session and signs autographs.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
And there are games on board like Sector Set (a Star Wars version of bingo) and mini droid racing.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Dinner on Day 2 is a "taste around the galaxy," starting with a bread course based on Mustafar and ending with dessert inspired by the ship's home planet of Chandrila.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
This is a shrimp course inspired by the Star Wars planet of Felucia.
After dinner, there are different events added to your itinerary. You could help D3-O9 deal with a probe droid or join a secret meeting with Captain Keevan on the bridge.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
...Or maybe, instead of doing a secret mission, you just want to take a break and browse the Chandrila Collection gift shop on board.
David Roark / Disney
In any case, after dinner, an "emergency" is called on deck.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
And in case you were wondering, the Starcruiser designates what a real emergency and a "story emergency" look like at the beginning of the trip, so you don't hear the First Order sirens and immediately start evacuating.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Red lights start flashing and stormtroopers block the exit of the Halcyon.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
Lieutenant Kroy will take command of the ship and start calling out the people in the crowd who helped aid the First Order over the past two days. People turn to see who's been ratting on Chewbacca, as Kroy name-drops his allies on the Halcyon.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
At this point, we don't know if our ship will land safely, and you won't either if you stop now, because SPOILERS ABOUT THE ENDING AHEAD.
Lucasfilm
Lieutenant Kroy explains that everyone better stand order for the Supreme Leader, and our favorite triple-bladed villain boards the ship, Kylo Ren.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Kylo Ren is not happy he has to get involved.
Luckily, the Resistance will also have help on the ship, as Rey had been sneaking around all day and Chewbacca was ready with his harpoon gun.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
An epic lightsaber battle commences.
David Roark / Disney
And once we get our ending, which I'm not going to get into a ton of detail about because I don't want to spoil EVERYTHING, fireworks light up the bridge of the Starcruiser.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
The journey concludes, and you can return to your cabin to catch some z's after an exciting voyage (or you can hang out in the atrium, play a round of Sabacc in the lounge, or go shopping in the gift shop).
Caitlyn Mccabe / Disney
The next morning, after breakfast, passengers are shuttled back down to the Starcruiser's terminal and the journey concludes.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
It's a very eventful two days, and not something for you if you just want a vacation by a pool (there are no pools in space).
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
It's also not something for supreme introverts, because the Starcruiser experience relies on passengers getting involved in the story themselves. It makes you feel like you're a character in a Star Wars video game. There's no other time you'll be able to test your stealth by sneaking away from stormtroopers.
Matt Stroshane / Disney
The more they do, the more interesting everything gets. Cast members on Batuu will comment about the characters on the ship during the planetary excursion, and crew members will slip you secret notes when you start asking questions and spreading Starcruiser gossip.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
It's really what you make of it!
Lucasfilm
After a full two days, I found myself thinking about the Starcruiser. And though my legs were sore from running with Chewbacca away from stormtroopers...
...I found myself fondly remembering my time in the ship's climate simulation chamber, which "perfectly simulates the climate on the destination planet."
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
It's...a patio. TBH, I want to start calling my patio at home a climate simulation chamber.
Audrey Engvalson / BuzzFeed
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opens March 1 and excursions can be booked through the DisneyWorld.com website!
