Liars and scammers and fraudsters, oh my!

If you, like me, love hearing about a scam, you probably, like me, loved The Tinder Swindler (even if you hated the ending, when it was revealed that the worst that happened to Simon Leviev/Shimon Hayut was all his expensive clothes being sold on eBay).

Here are 20 movies and series to get your next fraud fix from:

1. Inventing Anna (2022)

This miniseries, released by Netflix less than two weeks after The Tinder Swindler, was inspired by the exploits of Russian-German scam artist Anna Sorokin, who pretended to be a wealthy heiress named Anna Delvey to defraud various US banks, hotels, and "friends" for a staggering $275,000.

2. The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman (2022)

The Puppet Master is Netflix's limited docuseries about Robert Hendy-Freegard, a conman who pretended to be a British spy, telling his victims he worked for MI5, the Special Branch, or Scotland Yard. He coerced them into giving him money, cutting themselves off from family and friends, and in some instances, performing sexual acts with him.

The subject of this Showtime series is Richard Scott Smith, who spent two decades preying on women and manipulating them into giving him money. Hulu's take on the Fyre Festival fiasco mostly revolves around festival and influencer culture, specifically how Instagram influencers were able to, well, influence so many people into buying tickets to what turned out to be such a disastrous event. It also features an interview with festival cofounder (and current federal inmate) Billy McFarland.

11. Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (2019)

Netflix's documentary, meanwhile, focuses more on McFarland's con and its victims — those who bought tickets, his employees, his investors, and the Bahamas residents who were impacted by the scheme.

12. Dirty John (2018)

Based on Christopher Goffard's podcast of the same name (which I highly recommend giving a listen), the first season of this Bravo biopic series — now streaming on Netflix — is a monster catfishing tale. It follows Debra Newell as she's taken in by John Meehan, a con man posing as an anesthesiologist who makes her life — and her daughters' lives — a living hell.

Magnolia Pictures / Netflix / Via youtube.com

This one is pretty wild, and that's saying a lot. It follows a young author, JT LeRoy, who, in the late '90s and mid-'00s, wrote several semi-autobiographical novels about a boy living on the streets with an abusive mother. His books caught the attention of numerous high-profile literary figures and celebrities (including Winona Ryder and Bono).

It turns out, though, JT LeRoy never existed (dun dun dun). Check it out on Amazon Prime.

17. The Impostor (2012)
