At 2021 The Game Awards, Sega released a new trailer for the sequel to their surprisingly successful film, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Paramount Pictures / Via youtube.comWith Jeff Fowler returning to the director's chair, this sequel is set to premiere in theatres on April 8, 2022, with Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey returning as Sonic, Tom, and Dr. Robotnik, respectively.
Judging from the trailer, it looks Sonic will battle Robotnik again as he attempts to steal the Master Emerald.

This premise very much follows that of the game, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in which the doctor tricks the red echidna into battling Sonic so he can take the Emerald for himself. Hopefully, this means we'll get to see the blue hedgehog finally go Super Saiyan (sorry, I meant Super Sonic).
At the same time, Sonic appears to be clashing with his human friend, Tom, over his desire to protect Earth as a superhero vigilante (the latter even namedrops Batman).

It also looks like Sonic and his friends will go on an Indiana Jones-style adventure to the temple of the Master Emerald. At the same time, Sonic's race through these ancient ruins looks like a level straight out of one of his video games.
This film features the return of Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik and Sonic meeting his iconic companion, Tails, and his friend/rival Knuckles.

Tails will once again be voiced by Collen O'Shaughnessey (who has voiced the character since 2014). On the other hand, Knuckles will be voiced by Idris Elba in his quest to star in every major film franchise (seriously, the dude is everywhere right now).
Also, Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik is rocking a new look, complete with a new mustache that looks like a pair of fists that have developed sentience.

All in all, Carrey looks much more like his character in the video games, which shows how the filmmakers have continued to embrace the source material.
This trailer honestly gave me goosebumps when Knuckles stopped Sonic's "spin attack," which shows just how powerful the red echidna really is.

So now, it looks like we're getting Sonic v. Knuckles: Dawn of Blue Justice.
